What You Should Know About TruStage Car Insurance

The Rundown

  • TruStage is known more for its life insurance rather than auto coverage
  • Instead of writing its own car policies, TruStage is partnered with Liberty Mutual and Esurance
  • Liberty Mutual and Esurance are solid car insurance options, but their rates tend to be higher than the national average

TruStage has been a trusted name in life insurance for over 50 years. Although it’s better known for its term and whole life insurance plans, TruStage also offers a variety of insurance options.

One of those alternative options is car insurance. Although TruStage advertises car insurance on its website, it doesn’t actually sell policies. Instead, TruStage partners with Esurance, now Allstate, and Liberty Mutual for car insurance. Depending on your ZIP code, TruStage will direct you to one of its partners.

TruStage promises you’ll be in good hands regardless of which company you choose. However, you should always compare car insurance quotes from as many companies as possible. Allstate and Liberty Mutual usually have higher rates than other companies, so you might overpay with Trustage if you don’t compare your options.

Is TruStage a good car insurance company?

Although TruStage is a trusted name in life insurance, buying a car policy is a little more complicated. Rather than write its own policies, TruStage sends customers to either Allstate or Liberty Mutual car insurance.

The good news for TruStage customers is that both Liberty Mutual and Esurance are excellent car insurance options. After you express interest in car insurance with TruStage, you’ll work exclusively with Esurance or Liberty Mutual representatives.

It’s important to note that Esurance’s parent company — Allstate auto insurance — phased out the brand as part of its Transformative Growth Plan. It will continue to work with existing Esurance customers, but new customers will work with Allstate.

Allstate has strong financial ratings and ranks in the top five for customer satisfaction in J.D. Power’s annual survey.

TruStage Car Insurance Ratings

TruStage obviously recommends them, but how do Esurance and Liberty Mutual ratings look? A good place to start is with A.M. Best, which rates companies on their financial strength. The better score a company has, the more likely it will be able to pay any future claims you might have.

Esurance has a superior rating of A+ from A.M. Best, while Liberty Mutual has an excellent A. Whichever company you buy insurance from, you can rest assured that your claims will be paid.

Another third-party rating company that offers valuable insight is the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) rates companies on the number of complaints they receive compared to their size. A 1.0 is the national average — anything higher means a company gets more complaints.

Esurance has a slightly higher NAIC rating at 2.94 than Liberty Mutual’s 2.22. Although this means both companies get double the complaints than the national average, they’re not the worst ratings for major names in insurance.

Finally, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) rates companies on their ability to resolve customer issues. Liberty Mutual and Esurance both have an A+, but they also have several thousand customer complaints on the site.

As for customer reviews, most drivers say they’re satisfied with how fast the claims process is. The most common complaint is slow customer service responses.

TruStage Car Insurance Coverage Options

Whether TruStage sends you to Esurance or Liberty Mutual, you’ll have a wealth of insurance options to choose from. Most insurance companies sell enough to cover both minimum and full coverage car insurance, including Liberty Mutual and Esurance.

The basic types of insurance you can buy from both companies are:

  • Liability. Most states require liability before you can drive, which pays for damages and injuries you cause to others. It does not protect your vehicle.
  • Collision insurance. Collision insurance covers your vehicle after an accident, no matter who is at fault. It also covers you if you hit a stationary object, like a mailbox.
  • Comprehensive insurance. Comprehensive insurance covers fire, floods, extreme weather, vandalism, and theft. Learn more about collision vs. comprehensive car insurance.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance. This coverage protects you against drivers with inadequate insurance and hit-and-runs.
  • Medical payments/personal injury protection. Depending on your state, you can add medical payments or personal injury protection to your policy to help pay medical bills.

Your state insurance laws will determine which types and limits of each car insurance policy you must carry to drive legally. While collision and comprehensive auto insurance aren’t required by law, the terms of your auto loan or vehicle lease might require you to have it.

TruStage Car Insurance Add-Ons

Most insurance companies offer add-ons you can purchase to increase the value of your policy. Some companies offer very few, while others have extensive lists.

For example, Liberty Mutual offers a wide variety of add-ons:

  • Accident forgiveness. Liberty Mutual will forgive your first at-fault accident or traffic incident if you’ve been claims-free for at least five years.
  • New car replacement. Rather than paying for its depreciated value, Liberty Mutual will replace your car with a new one if you total it in its first model year or before you’ve driven 15,000 miles.
  • Better car replacement. As an upgrade to new car replacement, Liberty Mutual will replace a car of any age with a vehicle one year newer.
  • Deductible fund. If you add a deductible fund to your policy, Liberty Mutual will contribute $70 annually to a fund you can use for your future deductibles.
  • Gap insurance. If you total a car when you own more on your loan than the vehicle is worth, gap insurance will pay off the rest of your loan.
  • Original parts replacement. This add-on ensures that Liberty Mutual will pay for original manufacturer parts, rather than aftermarket parts, to repair your car.

Allstate’s list of add-ons isn’t as long, but it offers competitive coverage options, including:

  • Rideshare insurance. Covers the gaps that basic insurance from rideshare companies don’t cover.
  • Roadside assistance. Pays for tows, tire changes, jump-starts, and other roadside services.
  • Personal umbrella insurance. Extends the limits of your auto insurance policy to cover unforeseen costs.
  • Rental reimbursement. Allstate will pay for a rental car or rideshare services for drivers with full coverage when their vehicle is in the shop for repairs after a covered event.

Esurance has fewer options but still offers a few valuable add-ons to its existing customers. You can buy the following add-ons from Esurance if you already have a policy:

  • Roadside assistance. If you’re stranded on the side of the road, you’ll get up to $75 for tire changes, towing, and locksmith services.
  • CarMatch rental. Esurance covers up to $3,000 or 45 days for a rental car if your vehicle is temporarily unavailable after a covered event.

Esurance also offers gap insurance to protect you from an upside-down loan.

Although add-ons can improve your overall coverage, they can also significantly impact your rates. Make sure you only buy what you need to keep your rates low. Find out how much insurance coverage you need.

What other types of insurance does TruStage sell?

Although you can get help buying your car insurance from TruStage, it’s not what this company is known for. TruStage is primarily a life insurance company and sells everything from large permanent plans to small burial policies.

However, it sells more than life and car insurance. When you shop at TruStage, you can purchase the following types of insurance:

  • Renters
  • Homeowners
  • Condo
  • Term life insurance
  • Whole life insurance
  • Accidental death and dismemberment
  • Guaranteed acceptance life
  • Funeral

Like its car insurance, TruStage doesn’t underwrite its own homeowners, condo, or renters policies. Instead, it partners with Liberty Mutual for these policies.
